13 Famous Black DAFs
Who is who?
Standing: Scottie Pippin (Mattel), Diana Ross (Mattel), Brandy (Mattel), President Barack Obama (Dragon in Dream Inc.), Beyonce (Mattel), Melanie Brown aka Scary Spice (Galoob) and Diana Ross (Mego).
Sitting: Samuel L. Jackson as Mace Windu (Hasbro), Billy Dee Williams as Lando Calrissian (Hasbro), Snoop Dogg (Vital Toys), Freema Agyeman as Martha Jones (Character Options Ltd.), Julius W. Harris as "Tee Hee" (Sideshow Collectibles), Kiely Williams as Aquanetta Walker (Play Along Ltd., Division of Jakks Pacific), and Raven-Symoné as Galleria Garibaldi (Play Along Ltd., Division of Jakks Pacific).
Notice there are 14 figures, but I cite 13 famous people? Diana Ross is there twice - once by Mattel and once by Mego. Anyone think one company did better than the other? I love the Mattel doll, but I really love the complexion and the jawline of the Mego Diana. There is a second Raven-Symoné, but I wasn't able to find her in time for this photo.
love Diana Ross by Barbie.
ReplyDeleteStill looking to buy her in Malaysia.
Hope to get her someday.
I'm sure you know there are many other (better) versions of Samuel L. Jackson, from Sideshow Collectibles, Hot Toys and even BBI had a generic AA body with a head clearly meant to be Samuel L. ~Matt/TheRenCapt from POSSE
ReplyDeleteCool picture!
ReplyDeleteI prefer the Mattel version of Diana Ross.
Thanks for sharing this picture.

Excellent post! I had to look up Martha Jones, Tee Hee, and Aquanetta Walker. I guess I am not up on my “pop culture” trivia. I guess I won’t be saying “Alex, pop culture for $200.00.” LOL!
ReplyDeleteHi, Asrul "iLham" Sany! Hope that the Mattel (Barbie) Diana Ross reaches Malaysia. Or that you can get her in a trade, etc.
ReplyDeleteHi, Matt! Yes, there are MUCH better versions of Samuel L. Jackson. My favorite is the Hot Toys one. But then I would chose Hot Toys, wouldn't anyone, LOL?! I just love the un-likeness of this figure. His watermelon head, gimlet eyes, and precise teeth tickle me for some reason.
No, having seen the photos of Mr. Jackson in Mace Windu outfit, I would guess who this Hasbro guy is. He's Caricature Sam ;-D.
Hi Debbie! I love the hair and the delicacy of the Mattel Diana Ross. But - and you guessed one was coming, right? - in spite of her Amazon proportions, her talon hands, and her dazed but piercing glare, I'm fond of the Mego Diana, too. She's like a Zombie Diana.
My pleasure, taking the photo ;-D
I have a different version of Billy Dee as Lando Calrissian. Is he in his original costume and which movie is he from?
ReplyDeleteThat's lots of star power there! But it seems nobody can outshine Diana (Mattel) there. She's my fave of that bunch.
ReplyDeleteGreat photo line-up. I like seeing the dolls next to each other. For some reason, I never take out more than two or three dolls at a time and most of the time I have only one out of his/her box. I seldom compare dolls, so it is great to see a group here.
ReplyDeleteThe Raven-Symone doll is scaring me, though.
The Diana Rosses and the Brandi doll are my favorites. I like their expressions. It's nice to see a range of skin tones all in one photo!
ReplyDeleteMs. Leo, you probably have one of the nicer Billy Dee as Lando Calrissian figures, LOL. I have the Hasbro one from "Return of the Jedi." He is NOT in his original costume ;-)
ReplyDeleteHi Niel! Yes, there're a lot of stars in that photo. You should have seen the jockeying for center placement ... groan ;-D
Kim, hi! I love to do group photos. Hard to get everyone in and rough to replace them afterwards. The Raven-Symone doll does have an intense look. Maybe I better look harder for the Mattel Raven?
Elizabeth, hi! The Dianas stopped their catfight to acknowledge your "exquisite taste" then returned to "I was Diana FIRST," and "You oafish amazon, we could NEVER be seen in Kenwear." Oh and Brandi sends her thanks, too.
I love the range in the complexions, too. Will have more group/comparison photos coming ;-D
Cool post! I like Scary Spice. :)
ReplyDeleteHi Beebo! I love Scary Spice's hair especially. Her outfit is cute, too. For her - can't imagine myself dressed like that LOL.
ReplyDeleteI love your description of the Samuel L. Jackson figure! LOL! I have the same one. I wonder how many celebrities have become furious over their doll likeness? :)
