Vivid Imaginations - Brown British are Coming!

Ladies and gents, folks of all ages, this tip is from SuperCoolDollhouse. SuperCoolDollhouse, you are the MAN! Scoop King! Let's give him both hands. Applause.

Behold, Britain's Boy Band, JLS, who reached second place on The X Factor in 2008. The X Factor is a musical talent reality show that I would not watch unless I had to choose between watching that show and being torn limb-to-limb. Shudder. "JLS" is an initialism for - Jack the Lad Swing. However, in spite of the reality show source, something "good" came from that television: four new ethnic male dolls! Squeak!

1. Vivid Imaginations brings JLS members to vinyl life.
Aston Merrygold
Marvin Humes
JB Gill and
Oritse Williams

2. The JLS dolls are PLAYSCALE - 30 cm! Their arms and legs seem to be straight, not jointed. Shame that. It's tricky finding poseable young male bodies. Word association? Cute. I can appreciate cute young guys as well as cute older men - wink. Especially in playscale drama.

There seem to be three versions of the dolls: original set with each group member packaged separately, a 4-doll set of the original group members, and a third set with doll wearing their Outta This World exclusive outfits.

3. Price, postage, PRICE. At one website, the sale price for the JLS members is 14.99 GBP for one doll which today translates to $23.39 USD. So the JLS guys will cost a little more than most Mattel pink box dolls. Given that each doll has a complete outfit - top, pants, shoes, and other small accessories, that is not a steep price. Postage from the U.K. or from Australia, I don't want to think about. although I could remind myself that these are once in a blue moon figures ... so they might be worth it. Whether Amazon.co.uk will sell them to the U.S. or outside of Britain, I have to find out.

Thanks again for the scoop, SuperCoolDollhouse.

  1. WOW, they're very cute! It doesn't look like they have any articulation, that's too bad. It will be a nice change for the collectors who don't need articulate bodies. :)

    Thanks for posting!

  2. Sweet vengeance! For once in my life someone else is getting ripped off on shipping charges..
No, no. Just kidding. For what it's worth I can promise you that to ship from UK to the US is going to be a lot less than if you were shipping the other way around. Unless the seller is a cheat, I guess.
I'll definitely be getting some of these. I wonder what the bodies are like.. and the clothes.. and the feet and shoes and everything! Brand new dolls are awesome. :D

  3. Nice to see some new faces. I love the one in the yellow scarf. I may put him on my list. Actually shipping from AU isn't that bad. Like Alrunia said, it's much less than coming from here. Could you imagine if some company or someone just produced articulated bodies. There is a business there. If someone is reading this and wants to take on that project, we welcome it!

  4. Hi Tracy India and Alrunia!

These dolls remind me of Hasbro's S Club 7 dolls. Interesting faces, but low articulation. Face is most important to me; articulation would be next. I figure if I need the doll to be poseable, I will find a body to match ;-)

@Alrunia. lol about the vengeance. When I have ordered from overseas or outside of the country (i.e., outside U.S. - and I have done so in richer days), I have spent heavily on postage alone. Shrug. Still I wouldn't return any of the ones I bought.

Well maybe a few of the Jenny ones ;-D

  5. I agree with you D7ana. It is hard to get new ethnic faces. I wonder does the hat come off the one with the hat? That would be a deal breaker!

Alrunia, we are counting on you for all the info on these dolls. We will need plenty of pictures. Maybe you could purchase a few for us Yanks.

  8. Great post, D7ana. These are nice dolls/figures from what I can tell. It's too bad they are not articulated. Love the individual head sculpts.

Thanks for sharing this tip from SuperCollDollhouse.

  9. @ Vanessa - Do you mean Ortise in the gray scarf? Actually, the action figure sites - the ones selling loose bodies do have loose bodies lacking heads so that you can add the head of your choice to that body. Tomorrow, I can check into the options. I love seeing new playscale faces, too.

@ Ms. Leo - Yes, it is hard to find different ethnic male faces. Please see the link I left for Vanessa to see Ortise without his hat - it's him in his box and the hat is to the left of him when we look at him. For him, his hat is on his right. ;-D

@ Marta, these dolls might be available in Spain. Or you might be able to order them from England? I will find out if they ship outside of the UK and AU.

@ Super Cool Doll House - lol, yes, you know me. I kept oohing and aahhing Sunday after I realized what a plum you had sent me ;-D

@ BDE - you are welcome. And yes, SCDH is super generous to pass this on to me. Vivid Imaginations also produce the Justin Bieber dolls, someone pointed out to me. That poor doll looks anemic; i hope these dolls don't follow in that manner.

Also, they might possibly be shorter a la Justin - another collector pointed that out.

Also again - they might sell the dolls in the U.S.A. I mean, if they are spreading the JLS group to the world, maybe we can get them here, too.

lol - so much to think about. The world is sooo full of richness!

  10. The dolls look great. Now, I have to find how to order them from the U.K.

  11. These look very well done for the price point and the dolls actually bear a decent resemblance to the young men in the band. I will admit that JL's stare is a bit unnerving - his eyes seem to opened very wide. I think it is interesting that 3 of the 4 are open-mouthed and smiling....

  12. Hi Male Doll World! I used Amazon.co.uk before for my Bollywood dolls. Might try them.

Hi Kim! Yes, the likenesses look good. And yes, lol, JL's stare does look odd. Like he has been transfixed, very keen and focused stare almost. And yes, 3 out of the 4 grin. Interesting, that.

  13. Oh dear. I think I just left a comment while signed into my boyfriend's account, lol. Well, I'm sure he thinks they're cute too. Though I'm not sure they'd be on his wishlist.

  14. Hey, yay, SmidgeGirl! I blipped out and published both comments before realizing the "oops" moment and deleting the "uh oh" one. Let's cross our fingers that no officious types were scanning the Internet before I tapped that delete key. Whew.

Thanks for letting me know. BF need never worry ;-)

Aren't these new guys cute - especially in 1:6 scale? And guess what? There are MORE to COME. That's right. Embarrassment of riches in playscale quantity. Sshhh ... not yet though.
