Mattel JLo Booty - er Body - Revealed on Flickr

Want to see the new Mattel JLo doll ... um ... nude? Check these Flickr photos that start here. Looks like the YNU Group, Inc.'s Mixis dolls, BBI Perfect Body action figures, and the Get Set Club dolls will need to guard their titles as most full-bottomed. I have pulled up some older photos showing body profiles of those other dolls/figures. For comparison ...

One Flickr commenter considers the JLo doll body racist. Thoughts? Opinions? Thanks!

  1. Tal vez, seguro que viendo las comparaciones algunos pensaran que si.

  2. I don't know a thing about what J-Lo's body actually looks like, but the person you mention seems to take issue with the fact that everything BUT her butt (and thighs) was slimmed down to conform to the offensive stereotype. So yes I'd call it offensive. Not necessarily the same as racist, but pretty inappropriate none the less. The new body mold isn't offensive in itself, it's got a perfectly valid figure (EVERY figure is a perfectly valid figure), I just think it's a matter of using such a superficial trait to express the doll's identity. Think Mattel making a Beth Ditto doll with the generic Model Muse body plus extra large bust. Sure BD's tatas are bigger than most people's, but her body is more nuanced than that, and cutting it down to a single "defining trait" sends out a certain message about body acceptance.
    That's what I think anyway :)

  3. Have you compared the 1970 Living Barbie and 1971 Live Action Barbie dolls to these dolls? Living and Live Action dolls seem to have larger hips, although they may just be an illusion. I've never put a tape measure around the dolls to compare them to the Twist N Turns of the time.

  4. Thanks for sharing the Flickr link to the JLo doll images and for sharing comparison images of your Mixis and Get Set dolls. I guess I would have to see the JLo doll compared with another to determine whether Mattel actually gave her more cush in her tush. More than anything else in the images, I see an arched back, which gives the appearance of a larger bottom.

    Since she is well-known for this body attribute, and we all know she is more than what follows her, I think Mattel's rear enhancement plays on this. Had they not given her a more curvaceous body, some would wonder why.

  5. Thanks for the pictures and the comparison. I didn't go to the link, so I'm not sure what the owner of those pictures had to say about the doll. J.Lo is known for her bottom. She is an incredibly, well accomplished entertainer, but it is the bottom that is her signature trait. If they had produced a doll without an enhanced bottom, there probably would have been controversy. You CAN NOT make a J.Lo doll and not add that feature. If they did a Pamela Anderson doll, they would have to enhance the breast, because that's her signature trait.

  6. Dear Lindaivette Montes de Oca, Alrunia, Skippercollector, Black Doll Enthusiast, and Vanessa - thanks for your comments.

    @Lindaivette Montes de Oca - No estoy seguro de que me siento esta muñeca culo centrada es ofensivo. He estado pensando en ello. Por eso me retrasé responder. Todavía no estoy completamente seguro de que no es ofensivo. ¡Qué dilema ;-}

    @Alrunia, Black Doll Enthusiast, and Vanessa - I am not sure that I feel this butt-focused doll is offensive. I have been thinking about it. Hence the delayed response.(Come on, I had to get a “hence” sentence in somewhere, lol. We all seem to agree that a huge bottome on a doll is not a bad thing: it is a variant on the "usual" but not bad in itself. I am still not completely sure that it is not offensive. What a dilemma ;-}

    @Skippercollector - alas, I do not have nor have I ever had any of the Barbie Live Action or Living dolls. So I have no physical comparison although I have seen the photos of the Live Action Barbie on the cover of period (circa 1970) fashion booklets so I agree with you that that doll seems to have a wider hip span the the TNT dolls of that period.

    I have seen hip span measurements of various Barbie bodies. I'll look for them and get back either here or in a different blog post.

    Mattel doesn't usually use a head or a body for one doll so the JLo doll body will probably get used for other dolls. Hmmm ....

  7. Am I the only one that thinks they could have used a better headmold than that one? Doesn't really look like J-lo at all to me. Even with the bigger butt.

  8. I like seeing diverse body types in dolls, so I'm happy to see a doll with a bigger booty. I agree with Miss_Lola_77 that they could have used a better headmold. The doll does not look like JLo at all to me.

  9. Hi Miss_Lola_77 and Roxanne! I agree - that the likeness could have been better. I barely detect "JLo" at all. Shrug.

    Body build diversity works for me, too ;-)

  10. Really? You don't see JLO? I think it's a really good likeness. Much better than the second JLO doll I saw. This is one of the JLO images that looks like this doll to me. http://athleanx.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/07/jennifer-lopez-diet.jpg

  11. Apart from the weird back curvature which all the new Barbies seem to have, this body reminds me a lot of the original Barbie body. Yes, it does accentuate the bottom but all the Fashionista Barbies have it to some degree and the Monster High bodies have it to the extreme so I feel it may have more to do with the body designer rather than accentuating a particular feature. The face, however,is lovely and very much reminds me of JLo.

  12. I don't like that face or that body. That does not look like Jennifer Lopez and I don't care for model muse bodies at all, extra booty or not. However, it's not offensive in any way to me.

    If this doll had been articulated, I might have been interested but it's a total pass for me.

  13. Hi Vanessa, Carrickters, and Muff. Thanks for your comments.

    I don't like the closed mouth JLo doll. That's the one that I don't see the resemblance or much of a resemblance. I think the open-mouth doll has a better likeness.

    Articulation would have made the body better, I agree. But any departure from the basic Model Muse bodies is ... okay. Not run out and grab, but okay ;-)
