Undressing Harry: A 1 Direction Review

A local Walmart has several of the first issue 1 Direction Harry Styles dolls at the clearance cost of $10.00. Lucky me got him as an early birthday present. So I had to debox him and present him here as he is. No poser body, just the original no bend arms, no twist waist, and click - ha ha - bend knees.

First, I am glad that I have this version of Harry. The subsequent versions are made from that horrible waxy-looking plastic that reminds me of the Gangers on a bad day. Hideous faces, all of that lot have. Shudder. Though the clothes might be nice ... sigh. But this is the Harry issue I wanted and for sale, too. Cool.

For those interested, Harry stands about 11" tall. Yes, not 12". Not 11 1/2". Eleven inches. Which makes him fit in with my High School Musical teens. And his clothes fit them although his pants are a little longer. But given that his pants' fabric is thinner than most Mattel pants, that is not a problem.

Here I have Harry standing next to another Hasbro male teenager - Paul from the S Club 7. Paul stands around 11 3/4" tall. Yes, still not 12". He and Harry both have these click bend knees that do not bend much. Straight arms on both. Wide stances. Harry stands a little wider than Paul - and Harry can keep his standing balance a little better than Paul.

Ta da. Close up of Harry's face. I love his molded locks. Pity that his hair wasn't rooted, but there you have. Or don't have [rooted hair]. He's got the tiny, gimlet eyes that many action figures and/or personalized dolls have. Nice white teeth individually molded. And a nice big ear on the left side.

The shoes are my favorite accessory from this doll. They are molded plastic, but very life-like and detailed. Love the brown neutral color and the black heel and black bottom and black laces. I would have thought that brown oxfords were an older man's shoe choice, but I am glad to have them. I will check to see which other guys can wear these.

I hope to find the first version of Zayn next.

Curious about this doll? Muff has some posts about Justin Bieber who seems to be around Harry's size. Ms. Leo has a post that shows a rebodied Zayn. And Limbe Dolls shows the One Direction outfits worn by other dolls.

  1. Hey, thanks for the shout-out! I want this dolls outfit. I many purchase him for that. I love all the outfits that they did on these dolls. I guess stiff bendable knees is better than nothing. The Cody Simpson body has the bendable knees and arms. I that that make him a better body.

  2. That's a good price! That's what I keep expecting them to be when and if they make the rounds to Big Lots at which point I will get one for an additional 20% off, 'cause I still don't want to pay $10, lol.

  3. That's a good price for this doll. I must say I'm not a fan of the modelling of these dolls now that I've seen them (although only the later versions seem to have made it to Australia). And now that I've seen your body pictures, I'm not really tempted at all although the clothes look good.

  4. Hi and thanks, Ms. Leo, Muff, and Carrickters, for your comments.

@Ms. Leo - the Walmart where I found this Harry is the second one on Roosevelt Blvd. - just above Grant Avenue. I don't know if all the Philly Walmarts have him.

I agree that the jointed Cody body would be better because it's more poseable, but I am not sure if the complexion would match the guys I have that need new bodies.

@Muff - Oh, I would have LOVED to have found him for less than $10, but I didn't think I would so I "got" him now. Crossing my fingers that BigLots will carry him for that or less. (And I have one of their discount cards; would be great to be able to use it.)

@Carrickters - the modelling isn't great, but they provide a variety. And sometimes I have to smile at the near-dot eyes they have. The plastic curls make me smile, too. I don't know why.

The later versions, I don't like first because of the plastic; then I dislike the modelling on those - they seem sloppily done. Shrug.

The fashions are okay. Nicer than the cheapest Mattel fashions, but not in line with Integrity's Fashion Royalty. I like the fashion options - that the jacket is separate and the colors of the pieces. I'll continue this post with photos of his clothes loose. The shoes are top notch.

  5. I hope to find these guys even cheaper for their fashions. I don't really care for the look, but variety is always nice.

  6. Looks like my comment got eaten again... That's a good price even if you just want the outfit. The shoes weren't too bad either.

  7. Hi and thanks, Vanessa and Anderson's All-Purpose!

@Vanessa - wouldn't it be great if they sold their fashions separate? Sigh.

I'm not as keen to get these guys as I am to get the JLS guys or The Wanted guys. (Guys = dolls, lol)

@Anderson's All-Purpose - I kinda like this doll for some reason. He makes me smile - shrug. He isn't gorgeous or sexy or spectacular, but there's something cute about his beady eyes, plastic curls, and detailed teeth. The outfit is nice but poor Harry's got black and blue marks from the dye. Tsk.

The shoes though ... I'd almost have paid the $10 for the shoes alone. Incredible detail. And how often do you see realistic plastic oxfords for our guys.

  8. Alas, my links in my JLS post no longer work - darn photos have been pulled - but here's a pin of the JLS guys I want to get. Someday.

  10. Thanks for showing all those details! I love his face too and the shoes are awesome! The only problem are the straight arms but hey, nothing's perfect ;)

  11. You are welcome, Vanessa! I would have preferred articulated arms, but alas. No luck there. Tsk.

  12. Hola Carmen Gutierrez!

    Hi Carmen Gutierrez!
Here’s a link for Integrity Toys dealers for the new Jem dolls . The original Jem dolls by Hasbro are only available on the secondary market – I would seek them on collectors’ doll lists or eBay, if you use eBay. I sold my Pizazz and my Stormer a few years ago. (Sigh. But that was good – I have too many dolls and action figures, ha. Let me know if you would like me to post a Want Doll post here.) Good luck finding the dolls you want.
