Toy Violation

When I wrote Careful When Buying 1Direction Dolls, I had not realized the prevalence of toy substitution theft. Sure, I have seen dolls placed in other dolls' boxes. But I had naively assumed that that only happened occasionally. Well, it seems as though that is only ONE of the many tricks criminals use to steal toys. Yes, STEAL because that is what the criminal is doing. Stealing dolls. If this subject interests you, read Paul Nomad's short article about additional misdeeds. My favorite part was reading how some criminals were caught. Gotcha!

There's somebody in my area who does this with Monster High dolls. I feel sorry for the kids who will receive those creations, it's hard enough to follow all the different Monster High releases as it is.

I have seen many a Flickr photo of a repackaged doll that obviously doesn't belong in the box but gets reshelved anyway.

It's obvious these are collectors and it makes me think about how suspicious we all must appear when we are doll shopping. I can literally spend up to 30 minutes in the toy isle because I am so freakin' particular. I'm sure that many a store clerk or security camera has been directed my way.

Hi and thanks, MissSpottyJane and Muff! According to Paul Nomad's article, toys in general are vulnerable to these "violations." And yes, MSJ that is unfair to the kids trying to keep up with the various releases. That's why I think it's worse than just stealing the object.

And yes, I suppose I look suspicious, too, Muff, when I study and photograph dolls, etc. Usually a stock worker will position himself or herself around me. Shake head. Shame that. But it pays to examine because the toys can be tampered with and because we want to be sure that we want what we are buying.

I've only seen one example of this with a Barbie locally, at a target. My guess was that the doll was bought, swapped, and returned. It was incredibly obvious that the doll didn't belong in that package, but only because I knew what was supposed to be there. The people who process these returns just don't get paid enough to care. I regret not pointing that particular doll out to an employee, but frankly I figured they wouldn't believe me and just think I was some kind of nut.

Miss_Lola_77, thanks for your comment. Yes, the employee might not have believed you. Me, I worry that I might "tell" someone complicit with the bad deed. Shrug.

Enjoyed Paul's article. Nice to see those two thieves are still in jail where they belong! I will sometimes see partial packages where someone has come and stolen a piece out of a package.

Hi Vanessa! Yes, I cheered when I read that those thieves are in jail. Yay!
