Herringbone and Houndstooth in Logan Square

Could you name two formal, yet resilient fabrics? I nominate herringbone and houndstooth. I mean, what famous fictional character do those fabrics bring to mind? Sherlock Holmes, yes? Whether it is his hat or his overcoat, Mr. Holmes usually wears some kind of herringbone or houndstooth print. Very staid look. However, in the playscale world, herringbone and houndstooth prints have come some way from sartorial stoicism. So I pulled together some of my doll fashions using those patterns.

Here are some examples of new-style herringbone and houndstooth.

Who is wearing what? Shown from left to right, the dolls and fashions are:

Smartees Amanda wearing her original blouse, skirt, and hose and borrowing Anne Klein Barbie’s black-white houndstooth jacket and L.A. Luxe’s boots.

Mattel’s Nikki wearing an off-brand tan-cream houndstooth jacket, matching solid tan skirt, and Liv boots.

Aoshima/Skynet’s Girl's Mission Mai wearing Barbie Millicent Roberts’ beige cable sweater, Fashion Fever white-pink houndstooth mini skirt, white stockings, and Integrity Toys’ Rock Ringmaster Lukas’ boots. (Now that is a crush when you borrow his boots.)

Gemma (formerly Mattel’s Hermione Granger rebodied onto a Mattel HSM body) wearing a black herringbone Kari Mitchell coat, a Kari Mitchell black glitter top, a My Scene mini skirt, Takara Jenny socks, and her original Mary Janes.

Roxanne (formerly StarDoll Fallen Angel 2) wearing her original pants and boots and borrowing a Liv houndstooth jacket.

Integrity’s T.J. wearing Sinatra Barbie’s houndstooth suit and white blouse and black-white spectator pumps.

If these patterns interest you, you can read more about them on Charles Tyrwitt's website or see Google's offerings.

Hello from Spain: I love these outfits for your dolls. I think my Barbies have no houndstooth dress. It is a fabric that I like ... Keep in touch

Hey don't forget glen plaid and tweed to round it out! They are all my fall favorites! You dolls looked like they had a great day.

Houndstooth and herringbone are two of my personal favorite fabrics. I love dressing in them and so do my dolls.

I don't know if my first comment went in but here I go again.

I like these weaves. They are all my favs. I think you foget the glen plaid and the tweed. They round out the winter fabric collection. winter fashions are more classic! That what makes then so great. I really want the Sanatra suit for my girls. It is on my list for the new year.

I like this post! I used to have a herringbone suit that was my favorite! I enjoy how sedate yet cute these fabrics are. It's a pattern without the garrishness, you know?

Lovely dolls and fashions!

Hi Marta, Ms. Leo, Vicky, V., Vanessa, Ms. Leo (again and thanks!), and Muff.

The dolls had a great day - a rare photo trip outside the house for a start - although Fashion Editor Ken and Francie did not make it. Francie couldn't find the boots she wanted; Ken put on some weight so it was harder to get on his jacket. Yes, it is that time of the year again.

I have LOTS of plaids and some tweeds, but I wanted to focus on herringbone and houndstooth because the words resonated for me ;-) Also because I consider these patterns as the more staid cousins of tweeds and plaids. So it was fun to pull out brighter versions of them.

Good luck to Marta and to Ms. Leo for getting these patterned fashions. (Especially that Sinatra suit, Ms. L!). Vicky, I lucked out with that pink-white herringbone skirt; it was sold separate in a small pack.

Vanessa, Muff, and Ms. Leo - I used to have a standby gray-burgundy flecked tweed suit that I LOVED during my bank years, many years ago. Alas, I have not have a similar suit or fashion piece since then. Sigh.

V. I really LOVE Gemma's outfit, too. I like the mix of short and long. The Kari Mitchel coat fit her - I was glad that it did. The skirt just "looked like" it was made for her.

While she is not very poseable, I love her head with the older, the young teen body.

It amazes me how perfect the scale is on these prints. Your girls look very stylish and I particularly love Roxanne’s on trend fashion.

Merry Christmas, D!

Hi Cindi and Robin! Glad to hear from you, both.

@Cindi - Gemmas' coat and sweater are from a Kari Mitchell gift set that had a doll and some clothes. I got that set from Big Lots. The long herringbone coat, the sleeveless sweater, a long sleeved pullover, and a full skirt were items I recall from the set ... I forget what else they had. I'll check to see if I have a photo of the original set unopened ;-)

@Robin - yes, isn't it cool how the pattern is in scale? Roxanne's jacket is a Liv pack item. You might be able to find it on sale at Walmart or Target - big on the MIGHT there.
