Response From Toys R Us ... No We Can't

I sent a query to the Toys R Us Customer Service at ToysRUs.com about permission to scan a 1987 Toys R Us newspaper supplement and post that scan at my blog. I received a prompt and courteous response that no, they could not provide permission at this time. I don't think that they mean for me to re-send my query after the December holidays LOL.

So I will not scan any Toys R Us supplements here. I can respect their refusal without understanding why they say "no." It's their property.

according to copyright.gov (US Copyright Law)

"...the fair use of a copyrighted work... for purposes such as criticism, comment, news reporting, teaching (including multiple copies for classroom use), scholarship, or research, is not an infringement of copyright."

send that to Toysrus and feel free to criticise and comment upon their catalogue!

Thanks, DoC! I'll have to reconsider ...

It's their loss... credit for using their pictures and the mention of their name in your blog(s) could have sent potential customers their way.

Thanks, DBG! I would not have thought the request would be denied. Perhaps the person who responded could not provide permission; but then I suppose she would have written that I should write the TRU main office for permission.

I'm checking into the Fair Use guideline that DoC mentioned in her comment at a writer's forum; I'm curious now.

Ok, that is crazy. That is directing attention to them. They may have worried that it would be a negative comment and I could understand not giving permission for that reason. But maybe you could make a mock-post you want to write and send it to them to show what the post would look like and maybe they will sign off on that. If anything, look into the fair use laws and see if you can use that as a loophole to using it. Good luck!

Thanks for your support, Chelle!

I am checking into the fair use angle; it's not that I cannot take the refusal, it's the my-duty-as-a-reporter angle ;-D
