Back in 1968, President Lyndon B. Johnson proclaimed National Hispanic Heritage Week as the week containing September 15th and September 16th. Congress extended that observance to a month in 1988. How many people knew that Hispanic Americans have an observance month? I confess, I recently did.

Oh, I forgot about Susie's ancestry. Yes, she does count. I was wondering if there is a special month/week/day celebrating other ethnicity as well. :)

The U.S.A. has more “observance” months:
African-American History Month (February)
Women's History Month (March)
Irish-American Heritage Month (March)/St. Patrick's Day (March 17)
Asian/Pacific American Heritage Month (May)
Older Americans Month (May)
Anniversary of Americans With Disabilities Act (July 26)
American Indian/Alaska Native Heritage Month (November)
Whew! It seems that there should be an Italian American month or day, too, but I didn't see that listed on the Census website. Oh, there is one -- October .
