Sayonara - No, Say It Ain't So ....

Okay, we've picked up rumors. Seen the shelves barer. Wondered. I think the first time I noticed "discontinued" along with "customer care" was in a comment on Emily's blog. So I sent a query to Spin Master's Customer Care link and received an answer back:

" ... we currently do not have plans to release any new LIV dolls or accessories in 2013."

Sigh.

Oh, no. So it is true. No more Liv dolls after the current lines.  So should we rush out and nab every Liv doll we can find? Maybe not ... because the considerate Customer Care team provided a link to a new doll line, La Dee Da range. And I thought ... perhaps Spin Master has revamped the Liv concept. Maybe we can have those great, pose-able bodies with new heads? Light returns to the valley.

Still ... it wouldn't hurt to set aside a few of the Liv bodies that remain. Just in case.

Based on pictures from the 2012 Toy Fair, you might want to start stockpiling now. I don't see much in the way of articulation at all:

The new line is perhaps why LIV dolls have been discounted at Toys R Us. Here's hoping for proportionate heads and bodies, better sculpted hands, properly centered eyes... oh and let's not forget articulation.

Thanks for the scoop, D7ana!

I'm all for a new line as I enjoy the variety, but yeah, I'll be stocking up on old Liv bodies when I come across them.

Thanks for the update, Paul Nomad. Love your blog. Have subscribed ;-D

Thanks, DBG. I'll accept partial credit; I did see that the Liv line was discontinued elsewhere.

Thanks Muff! Variety is good.

But those Liv bodies ... posing fun.

Wow, that's a little surprising. They had some really nice accessories and clothes. I still have quite a few bodies here, but if I see a really good sale, I will definitely get some more. Thanks for the heads up.

Oh, sorry for the confusion--this is the same Anon as before and I'm not Paul Nomad, I simply linked to his pictures. His site is great, though!

That is bad news, I'm sorry to see Liv go. It's sad how quickly they went from one of the top Christmas toys to being deeply discounted everywhere. I'll miss their fashions.

Hi Vanessa, Anonymous, and MissSpottyJane!

I was surprised by the decision, too, Vanessa. Thanks for the link, Anonymous. I'll have to check some of his other posts. I'll miss their bodies and their fashions, too, MissSpottyJane. Sigh.

Wow, that is so sad. The girls only just made it to Australia last year and I've never even seen a Jake. They didn't seem to receive much publicity here so I guess no-one really knew about them - unless you were an adult collector who read doll blogs which I'm sure was not their target market.

As I was searching for information as to why the discontinuance of the LIV line, I ran across a comment you left for Spin Master dated 4/20/12. Could this have contributed to their demise?

Your Message
I am an adult collector of Barbie and other play scale fashion dolls. I don't like the huge Liv heads or the glass-like eyes, but I LOVE the Liv bodies. Like many other modern doll collector/enthusiasts, I have topped Liv doll bodies with Barbie heads. I just wrote a blog post showing three Barbie heads on three Liv bodies.

The companies would probably be horrified to learn that, but that is what's happening now. There are Barbie-Liv hybrid dolls all over.

Hi Carrickters and Vanessa. Thanks for your comments! I hope, Carrickters, that more of the Liv dolls reach Australia - sometimes lines that dry up in the US find homes in other countries. When the Flavas were waning in the US, the last wave of them, the Awards line, may have gone to Canada (I think that's what happened; I don't have any direct links.)

Vanessa, gee, I hope not. Little ole me, lol? Wait, ego check. Nope. I doubt it ;-D

Wow, the future curators for Barbie museums will have a tricky time identifying dolls with so many hybrids going round.

So it's true, then. Sadness. I rushed out and bought every Liv doll I could get my hands on .:) Luckily, they're all on clearance at this point.

D7ana said...

Congrats on finding the Liv on clearance now, Emily. The least thing we should have considering we are soon to be Liv-less.

Ouch. I deserve a pinch for that pun.

Hi Savanna Mielke! I, too, was saddened that the Liv line was disappointed. I wanted to use their bodies for my Barbies. Sigh. Well, hope that SpinMaster realizes their mistake and reissues the Liv line.
