While investigating Asian dolls and action figures available from Hobby Search, I came across a new-to-me action figure - the late Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. in PLAYSCALE! DiD Corporation produces him. (You may remember me mentioning DiD aka Hong Kong based Dragon in Dream Corporation as the producers of other action figures.) Eeek!
Okay, vented that excitement. Now a closer look and follow-up response. Well, the likeness is a little off, but kitbashers could probably tweak his face to perfection. I am not sure where they just missed the likeness. I mean, perfection of the likeness. The doll does resemble the late Dr. King. (And a current American Black actor whose name eludes me.) The figure has multiple hands to swap. Oh and a beautiful mini Bible with red-edged pages. A podium with multiple mics is also included. All for the modest sum of $178.29 USD - before postage from Japan.
The only problem is ... he's sold out at Hobby Search. So you'll have to find him someplace else. Still ... if you ever had a dream to own the man who had a dream in playscale, know that he exists. I wish you luck finding him.

How very interesting! He looks like MLK, but on the other hand he doesn't. Like MLK if he was very young and husky. But he also looks like that actor from one of the Tyler Perry shows - House of Payne. Uncle Curtis I think is his character's name. That doll looks like a younger version of Uncle Curtis.
He is available as a pre-order from Vantage collectibles (they are a US reseller). Their price is $134.99 plus shipping (that's $5 off the regular price). He is also on pre-order from Cotsworld Collectibles for $144.99. He has beautiful accessories, and I like that he has a shorter and stockier body type, but the price will be prohibitive for me. I'm still thinking about this one.

@Muff - yes, that's what I mean - he does resemble the activist; he doesn't quite. And yes, he does look like "Uncle Curtis" from _House of Payne_ before Mr. Payne grew his moustache. Thanks for pointing that resemblance out. But there is another actor as well ... I am stumped ;-)

@Roxanne - That's cute about the shorter, stockier body, ha ha. I would justify the cost to myself by saying that I am not paying about $150 for a single doll. I am paying about $100 for a rendering of a historical figure AND about $40.00 for a topnotch podium that I can use for YEARS in a variety of settings.
I shouldn't talk to myself.
Thanks for sharing this - What an interesting doll! Even though the likeness isn't quite right, it's such a detailed sculpt - and the accessories and outfit are so detailed as well!
I saw this figure about a month ago on Monkey Depot. They did a really good job on him, even though it's not perfect, it's pretty close. That podium is quite nice, too.
It seems to be very difficult to get face sculpts of specific people right. I think Mattel does it best, oddly enough.

@jSarie - DiD does excellent face sculpts. I expect their figures to breathe, lol.
@Vanessa - I miss checking stuff out at Monkey Depot and the like! Waahhh! Have to download stuff and soon. The King figure is incredible; I rather dig the podium, too. I mean, it could work for so many scenes ;-)
@Barb - yes, sometimes, there's just a touch off on getting a likeness complete. I will give Mattel credit for doing excellent likenesses. Usually - Playmates' Hilary Duff doll looks more like the actress/singer than the Mattel version ;-)
